Commentary
Straddling the Pacific Motorway the northern Gold Coast suburb of Ormeau is well known for its sprawling homes and beautiful countryside.
In keeping with the surroundings, developers in the area have continued the theme of acreage living throughout their residential projects.
The fact that no more new acreage subdivisions are allowed for Ormeau has added value to existing properties and meant that land being resold is generally not on the market for very long.
Jacobs Ridge is a new estate located to the east of the Pacific Motorway, offering a semi-rural location and views across farmland. Winding walkways, bicycle trails and a feature park that includes a multi-purpose sports course are features of this suburb.
Meanwhile, Ormeau Hills is a master planned community which offers more than a standard size block in the middle of suburbia. With wide tree-lined streets, this residential development has a backdrop of parkland, bushland and rolling hills with panoramic views in all direction, including to Stradbroke Island.
Established Ormeau homes on large blocks surround the local shopping village and are made primarily fo brick and tile.
The shopping village, the Ormeau Centre, has the essential shops-grocery store, chemist, post office, etc - but more elaborate retail facilities are outside the suburb. The only school in the suburb is the non-mainstream Toogoolawa School, but there are numerous schools in surrounding suburbs such as Coomera and Oxenford.
According to the 2001 Census there were 10,745 people living in the Gold Coast (C) statistical region ( of which Ormeau is a part) with a median age of 34, compared to the wider citys median age of 38.
The median individual income was between $400 and $499 per week, lower that the citys weekly income of between $600 and $699. Of all occupied private dwellings 72 per cent were either fully owned or being purchased, while 21.5 per cent were being rented.
